Brattleboro- Della Margaret Houle, 93, a former longtime resident of Hunt Avenue and later Town Crier Drive died peacefully Tuesday morning, March 21, 2017 at the Bradley House following a short period of declining health. She had been a resident at the facility for over two years.

Della was born in Clinton, New York on September 8, 1923 the daughter of Earl and Edith (Burdo) Pickering. She was raised and educated in New York State before moving to Brattleboro.

For over 30 years she had been employed at the former BookPress in Brattleboro where she retired from. She later worked part-time at the former Ames Department Store on Putney Road and Price Chopper Market on upper Canal Street. In her earlier years she worked at the former Berkshire Fine Spinning Associates on Cotton Mill Hill.

She was a member of the American Legion, Brattleboro Post #5 Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Carl M. Dessaint Post #1034 Auxiliary. A devout Catholic, Della was a longtime communicant of Saint Michael's Roman Catholic Church.

Of her leisure time activities, she enjoyed crafts, puzzles collecting dolls, and time shared with her family.

On May 4, 1946 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Putney she was married to Theodore "Jerry" Houle. Her devoted husband of 58 years predeceased her on February 5, 2005.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Houle of Brattleboro, Michael Houle of Phoenix, Arizona and Stephen Houle of Bernardston. Additionally she leaves six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great –nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Edward, Clarence, Lawrence and Willard Pickering.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Saint Michael's Catholic Church with Fr. Justin Baker, pastor, celebrant. Burial in Saint Michael's Parish Cemetery will be April 22, 2017.
